Who Should You Marry, and Why Should You Choose That Person?
Introduction
Marriage is one of the most significant decisions in a person's life. In Islam, marriage is not merely a relationship between two individuals; it is a sacred bond built upon faith, love, mercy, trust, responsibility, and mutual respect. Choosing a life partner requires careful consideration because the person you marry can influence your spiritual growth, emotional well-being, character, and life in this world and the Hereafter.
But two important questions arise: Who should you marry, and why should you choose that person? Islam provides guidance to help Muslims make this decision wisely, looking beyond physical appearance, wealth, family status, and temporary attraction.
1. Who Should You Marry According to Islam?
A. Choose Someone Who Values Their Faith and Character
One of the most important considerations when choosing a spouse is their religious commitment and character. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you (with a proposal), then marry (your daughter to) him.”
Source: Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 1084.
This hadith emphasizes the importance of religion and good character when considering a marriage proposal.
A person's faith should be reflected in their everyday conduct: honesty, kindness, fulfilling promises, respecting others, and fulfilling their responsibilities. Religious appearance or claims alone are not enough; observe how the person behaves, especially when angry, disappointed, or faced with difficulties.
A righteous spouse is not necessarily someone who never makes mistakes. Rather, look for someone who acknowledges mistakes, sincerely seeks improvement, and strives to live according to Islamic teachings.
B. Choose Someone Who Treats Others With Respect
How a potential spouse treats parents, relatives, friends, employees, and strangers can reveal important aspects of their character.
Do they speak respectfully? Can they disagree without insulting others? Do they take responsibility for their actions? Are they compassionate toward people who cannot offer them anything in return?
A person who consistently demonstrates patience, humility, honesty, and respect is more likely to contribute positively to a marriage.
Remember that good character should not be judged solely by how someone treats you during the proposal stage. Consider their established behavior and reputation as well.
C. Choose Someone With Whom You Have Compatibility
Faith and character are essential considerations, but practical compatibility also matters.
Before marriage, discuss important matters such as:
Religious practices and expectations.
Financial responsibilities and spending habits.
Career goals and family commitments.
Children and their upbringing.
Living arrangements and relationships with in-laws.
Communication styles and conflict resolution.
Expectations regarding household responsibilities.
You do not have to agree on every small matter. However, you should be able to discuss major differences honestly and respectfully.
Compatibility does not mean finding a perfect person. It means finding someone with whom you can build a stable, respectful, and purposeful life.
D. Choose Someone Who Respects Your Rights
Islam establishes rights and responsibilities for both spouses. A healthy marriage should not be built upon fear, manipulation, humiliation, or one-sided sacrifice.
A husband and wife should strive to treat each other with kindness and fulfill one another's rights.
Allah says:
“And live with them in kindness.”
— Qur'an 4:19
Although this verse directly addresses husbands regarding their wives, the broader Islamic teachings on mercy, justice, and good conduct guide the relationship between spouses.
Look for someone who respects your dignity, listens to your concerns, and understands that marriage involves responsibility rather than merely authority or control.
2. Why Should You Marry That Person?
A. Because They Can Help You Grow in Faith
Marriage can become a means of strengthening your relationship with Allah when both spouses encourage one another toward righteousness.
A supportive spouse may remind you of prayer, encourage good deeds, help you remain patient during hardship, and motivate you to improve your character.
Allah describes the purpose of marriage in the Qur'an:
“And He placed between you affection and mercy.”
— Qur'an 30:21
This verse highlights two beautiful qualities of marriage: mawaddah (affection or love) and rahmah (mercy).
The right spouse is not simply someone who makes you happy during easy times. They are also someone who encourages you to remain grounded in your faith when life becomes difficult.
B. Because You Can Find Peace and Companionship Together
Marriage should provide companionship, emotional support, and a sense of security. A suitable spouse is someone with whom you can share your concerns, celebrate achievements, discuss difficulties, and work toward common goals.
Peace does not mean that disagreements will never occur. Every marriage involves differences at some point. What matters is whether both people are willing to communicate, listen, apologize, and find solutions without disrespecting one another.
Choose someone with whom you can speak honestly and feel respected, rather than someone who requires you to suppress your feelings to keep the relationship peaceful.
C. Because Love Must Be Supported by Responsibility
Attraction and affection can be important parts of marriage, but they should not be the only reasons for choosing a spouse.
A successful marriage also requires commitment, patience, honesty, financial responsibility, and a willingness to work through difficulties.
Consider whether the person keeps promises, handles responsibilities maturely, and demonstrates consistency between words and actions.
Ask yourself: Can we make important decisions together? Can we resolve disagreements constructively? Will we support one another through illness, financial difficulties, family challenges, and changes in life?
These questions can reveal more about long-term suitability than temporary excitement alone.
D. Because You Share a Vision for the Future
Marriage joins two lives, two families, and often two different sets of expectations. Having a shared vision can help couples move forward with greater understanding.
You might discuss where you hope to live, how you want to raise children, how you will manage money, and how you will balance family obligations with personal goals.
A shared vision does not require identical personalities or interests. It requires mutual understanding, realistic expectations, and a willingness to make decisions together.
E. Because You Can Show Mercy and Forgiveness to Each Other
No human being is perfect. Every person has weaknesses, makes mistakes, and has areas in which they need to improve.
The right spouse is not someone without flaws, but someone who is willing to recognize them and work toward becoming better.
Both spouses should learn to distinguish between ordinary human imperfections and serious patterns of dishonesty, abuse, manipulation, or irresponsibility. Forgiveness is valuable, but it does not require accepting harm or abandoning personal safety and dignity.
A marriage becomes stronger when both individuals approach one another with sincerity, patience, accountability, and mercy.
3. Should You Marry Someone Because of Their Wealth, Beauty, or Status?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religion. So you should marry the religious woman (otherwise) you will be a loser.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari 5090; Sahih Muslim 1466
This hadith describes common reasons people consider when choosing a spouse and emphasizes the importance of religious commitment.
It does not mean that beauty, financial stability, family background, or attraction are irrelevant. These factors may reasonably be considered, provided the decision remains consistent with Islamic principles.
However, wealth can change, beauty changes with time, and social status does not guarantee good character. A person's faith, integrity, and conduct are crucial foundations for a lasting relationship.
Likewise, religious commitment should not be used to overlook serious incompatibility, harmful behavior, or an absence of mutual consent.
The goal is not to choose between attraction and character, but to seek a suitable combination of faith, good character, compatibility, and mutual acceptance.
4. How Can You Make the Right Decision Before Marriage?
Islam encourages believers to approach marriage thoughtfully rather than relying on emotion alone.
Step 1: Learn About the Person
Ask appropriate questions and seek reliable information about their character, religious practice, family expectations, responsibilities, and future plans.
Use permissible and respectful means to get to know one another before marriage. Involve trusted family members or advisers when appropriate.
Step 2: Look at Actions, Not Just Words
Promises are easy to make during courtship or marriage discussions. Consistent behavior over time provides more meaningful evidence of a person's character.
Observe how they handle disagreement, pressure, disappointment, and responsibility.
Step 3: Discuss Important Expectations
Do not assume that love will automatically resolve every difference. Discuss major matters openly before making a commitment.
If a serious issue arises, seek advice from a trustworthy, knowledgeable person or a qualified marriage counselor.
Step 4: Pray Istikhara
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his companions to pray Salat al-Istikhara when seeking guidance in decisions.
Istikhara is a way of asking Allah to facilitate what is good and turn away what is harmful. It does not require receiving a dream or a supernatural sign. Continue to assess the available information, seek sound advice, and make a considered decision.
Step 5: Ensure Mutual Consent
Marriage should not be entered into through coercion. Both individuals should freely consent to the marriage and understand the responsibilities involved.
Family advice can be valuable, but pressure, threats, or emotional blackmail should not replace genuine consent.
5. What If You Are Still Unsure About Whom to Marry?
Uncertainty does not automatically mean that a proposal is wrong. A major life decision naturally requires careful thought.
However, do not ignore serious warning signs simply because you feel attached to someone or fear losing the opportunity.
Take time to consider the person's character, compatibility, emotional maturity, and willingness to fulfill marital responsibilities. Seek advice from people who are wise, trustworthy, and not driven solely by personal interests.
You should also examine your own readiness for marriage. Ask yourself whether you are prepared to respect another person's rights, communicate honestly, manage responsibilities, and make compromises without losing your principles.
Marriage is not only about finding the right person. It is also about becoming a responsible spouse yourself.
Conclusion
So, who should you marry, and why should you marry that person?
Choose someone whose faith and character you respect, whose values are compatible with yours, who treats you with kindness, and with whom you can build a relationship based on mutual consent, trust, responsibility, and mercy.
Marry not merely because someone is attractive, wealthy, popular, or emotionally exciting. Consider whether that person can be a sincere companion in your journey through life and whether you can offer the same commitment in return.
Remember that no person can guarantee a life without hardship. Even a good marriage requires effort, patience, communication, and reliance upon Allah.
The right question is not simply, “Do I love this person?” It is also, “Can we help one another live with faith, fulfill our responsibilities, and build a marriage pleasing to Allah?”
May Allah grant every Muslim a righteous spouse, bless marriages with affection and mercy, and guide those seeking marriage toward what is best for their religion and worldly life. Ameen.
