The View of Ahl al-Sunnah Towards the Sahaabah and the Leadership of Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq رضي الله عنه
The Sahaabah (Companions) رضي الله عنهم hold a unique and honoured position in Islam. They were the people who believed in the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, accompanied him, supported him, learned directly from him, and conveyed his teachings to the generations that followed. Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa‘ah regard love and respect for the Sahaabah as an important part of their faith and maintain a balanced approach towards their lives and disagreements.
The Status of the Sahaabah
The Qur’an praises the early believers who supported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Allah says:
“And the first forerunners among the Muhajireen and the Ansaar, and those who followed them with good conduct — Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him.”
(Qur’an 9:100)
The Sahaabah sacrificed their wealth, families, homes, and sometimes their lives for the sake of Islam. They accompanied the Prophet ﷺ through persecution, migration, battles, and the establishment of the Muslim community.
Ahl al-Sunnah therefore speak about them with respect and refrain from insulting or belittling them. They believe that the Sahaabah were human beings and were not free from mistakes, but their overall virtue, sacrifices, and service to Islam are firmly established.
Love for the Sahaabah
Ahl al-Sunnah believe that loving the Sahaabah is part of loving those whom Allah and His Messenger ﷺ honoured. At the same time, they avoid exaggerating their status beyond what Islam teaches.
They especially recognise the virtue of the four Rightly Guided Caliphs:
- Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq رضي الله عنه
- ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه
- ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan رضي الله عنه
- ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib رضي الله عنه
They were among the greatest companions of the Prophet ﷺ and played an enormous role in preserving and strengthening the Muslim community.
The Leadership of Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq رضي الله عنه
After the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Muslim community faced an extremely difficult moment. The Prophet ﷺ had passed away, and the Muslims needed leadership to maintain unity and protect the foundations of Islam.
Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq رضي الله عنه was chosen as the first caliph. He was one of the earliest people to believe in the Prophet ﷺ and had accompanied him closely, including during the Hijrah.
His close relationship with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his distinguished service to Islam were among the reasons for his exceptional status.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“If I were to take an intimate friend other than my Lord, I would have taken Abu Bakr.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari; Sahih Muslim)
The Prophet ﷺ also instructed Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه to lead the Muslims in prayer during his final illness, an event that demonstrated his prominent position among the Companions.
Abu Bakr’s Firmness After the Prophet’s Death
One of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه’s greatest moments came immediately after the death of the Prophet ﷺ.
When some people were overwhelmed by grief and disbelief at the reality of the Prophet’s death, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه reminded the Muslims that worship belongs to Allah alone. He recited:
“Muhammad is no more than a messenger. Messengers have passed on before him…”
(Qur’an 3:144)
He then made clear that whoever worshipped Muhammad ﷺ should know that Muhammad ﷺ had passed away, while Allah is Ever-Living and never dies.
This was a moment of remarkable faith, clarity, and leadership.
Abu Bakr and the Preservation of Islam
During his caliphate, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه faced serious challenges, including the apostasy of groups and the refusal of some tribes to fulfil their religious obligations. He took firm measures to preserve the unity and obligations of the Muslim community.
He also supported the collection of the Qur’an into a compiled written form after many Qur’an reciters were martyred during the Battle of al-Yamaamah. This became an important step in the preservation of the Qur’anic text.
The Ahl al-Sunnah Approach to the Companions
The approach of Ahl al-Sunnah is neither to treat the Sahaabah as infallible nor to speak about them with hatred and contempt. Rather, they acknowledge their human nature while recognising their extraordinary virtues and sacrifices.
When discussing disagreements that occurred among some Companions, Ahl al-Sunnah avoid unjust accusations and leave their ultimate judgment to Allah. They recognise that these were people who lived with the Messenger ﷺ, carried Islam to the world, and were praised in numerous Qur’anic verses and authentic narrations.
Allah says:
“Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him.”
(Qur’an 98:8)
Conclusion
The Sahaabah رضي الله عنهم occupy a special place in Islamic history and in the understanding of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa‘ah. They were the generation that received Islam directly from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and transmitted his teachings to those who came after them.
Among them, Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq رضي الله عنه holds an exceptionally high position. His faith, companionship, sacrifice, leadership, and steadfastness after the death of the Prophet ﷺ remain important examples for Muslims.
Respecting the Sahaabah, recognising their virtues, and learning from their sacrifices helps Muslims appreciate how Allah preserved and transmitted the message of Islam through the generations.
May Allah be pleased with all the Sahaabah رضي الله عنهم, guide us to follow the Qur’an and Sunnah correctly, and grant us love and respect for those who carried the message of Islam. Ameen.
