The False Hadith About Adam Praying by Virtue of the Prophet ﷺ
Introduction
A narration is sometimes circulated claiming that when Prophet Adam عليه السلام committed his mistake and sought Allah’s forgiveness, he prayed to Allah by mentioning the virtue or status of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The narration is often presented as evidence for seeking Allah through the status of the Prophet ﷺ.
The commonly quoted wording is that Adam عليه السلام said, in meaning:
“O Allah, I ask You by the virtue of Muhammad to forgive me.”
However, this narration is not authentically established from the Prophet ﷺ. Scholars of Hadeeth have discussed its chain of transmission and have judged the report to be weak or fabricated.
Therefore, it should not be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ as an authentic hadeeth.
What Is the Source of This Narration?
The report is attributed to Anas ibn Maalik رضي الله عنه and is found in some later compilations, including a narration attributed to al-Haakim. It describes Adam عليه السلام allegedly seeing the name of Muhammad ﷺ and asking Allah for forgiveness through him.
However, the chain of transmission contains narrators whose reliability has been seriously questioned by Hadeeth scholars. Because of these defects, the narration cannot be used as proof of an Islamic belief or act of worship.
A narration being found in a book does not automatically mean that it is authentic. Every hadeeth must be examined according to the principles of Hadeeth criticism, including the reliability of its narrators and the continuity and strength of its chain.
How Did Adam عليه السلام Seek Forgiveness?
The Qur’an gives us the authentic account of Adam عليه السلام and Hawwa’ رضي الله عنها seeking Allah’s forgiveness.
Allah says:
“Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”
— Qur’an 7:23
This is the supplication Allah Himself has recorded in the Qur’an.
It teaches us that Adam عليه السلام turned directly to Allah, acknowledged his mistake, expressed his need for Allah’s forgiveness, and sought His mercy.
Allah then accepted his repentance:
“Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided him.”
— Qur’an 20:122
This authentic Qur’anic account is sufficient and should be preferred over unauthenticated reports.
Can This Hadeeth Be Used as Evidence?
No. A weak or fabricated narration cannot be used as evidence to establish a matter of ‘Aqeedah or to establish a specific form of worship.
The Prophet ﷺ strongly warned against attributing statements to him without verification. He said:
“Whoever deliberately tells a lie against me, let him take his place in Hell.”
For this reason, Muslims should be extremely careful when sharing quotations attributed to the Prophet ﷺ, particularly when those narrations concern matters of belief and worship.
The Importance of Following Authentic Evidence
Islam encourages believers to follow the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah. When a narration conflicts with established principles or lacks an authentic chain, it should not be presented as religious evidence.
The story of Adam عليه السلام provides an important lesson: when a person falls into sin, the correct response is sincere repentance, turning to Allah, acknowledging one's wrongdoing, and asking Allah for forgiveness.
Allah says:
“And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.”
— Qur’an 4:110
A Lesson for Every Muslim
The story of Adam عليه السلام is also a reminder that making a mistake does not mean that a person should lose hope in Allah’s mercy. What matters is sincere repentance and returning to Allah.
A Muslim should therefore:
- Acknowledge the sin.
- Feel genuine regret.
- Seek forgiveness from Allah.
- Leave the sin.
- Resolve not to return to it.
- Turn to Allah with sincere supplication.
The Qur’an repeatedly reminds us that Allah is Merciful and accepts sincere repentance.
Conclusion
The narration claiming that Adam عليه السلام prayed to Allah by the virtue of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is not authentically established and should not be quoted as a sound hadeeth of the Prophet ﷺ.
For matters of belief and worship, Muslims should rely upon the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. The Qur’an clearly records Adam’s supplication:
“Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”
(Qur’an 7:23)
May Allah grant us the ability to distinguish authentic teachings from weak and fabricated narrations, guide us to the truth, accept our repentance, and keep us firm upon the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. Ameen.
