Meaning of the Hadeeth: “The Shaytaan Has Despaired of Ever Being Worshipped by the Worshippers in the Arabian Peninsula”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave his Ummah many teachings concerning Tawheed, Shirk, and the efforts of Shaytaan to mislead people. Among these is the hadeeth in which the Prophet ﷺ said that Shaytaan had despaired of being worshipped by the worshippers in the Arabian Peninsula, but he would continue striving to create conflict and corruption among them.

This hadeeth is an important reminder that Shaytaan never stops trying to lead people away from obedience to Allah, even when certain forms of his influence may be weakened.

The Hadeeth

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Indeed, Shaytaan has despaired that the worshippers will worship him in the Arabian Peninsula, but he seeks to cause enmity among them.”

This was reported by Muslim in the hadeeth of Jaabir رضي الله عنه.

The hadeeth contains both good news and a warning. The good news is that Shaytaan was unable to achieve the complete goal of making the worshippers collectively worship him in the Arabian Peninsula. The warning is that he continues to work through other means, especially by creating hatred, disputes, division and hostility among Muslims.

What Does It Mean That Shaytaan “Despaired”?

The statement does not mean that Shaytaan has stopped trying to mislead people or that no one can fall into Shirk or disobedience.

Rather, the scholars explained that Shaytaan became despairing of achieving the particular objective mentioned in the hadeeth: that the worshippers in the Arabian Peninsula would collectively return to worshipping him.

Shaytaan continues to tempt individuals and communities. Allah says:

“Indeed, Shaytaan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy.”
— Qur’an 35:6

Therefore, a Muslim should never become careless about the dangers of Shaytaan.

Shaytaan's Other Great Objective: Creating Division

The hadeeth highlights another major method of Shaytaan: creating enmity between people.

He may encourage:

  • Hatred between Muslims
  • Arguments and unnecessary disputes
  • Family conflicts
  • Breaking relationships
  • Suspicion and mistrust
  • Backbiting and spreading rumours
  • Pride and arrogance
  • Sectarian and communal hostility
  • Injustice and oppression

Allah warns:

“Indeed, Shaytaan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer.”
— Qur’an 5:91

Although this verse specifically mentions intoxicants and gambling, it also demonstrates the broader objective of Shaytaan: to create hatred and prevent people from obeying Allah.

Shaytaan Wants Muslims to Fight One Another

When Shaytaan cannot make people abandon Islam altogether, he may seek to weaken them through conflict.

A person may pray, fast and perform other acts of worship, yet Shaytaan can still try to corrupt relationships through anger, jealousy, pride and hostility.

The Prophet ﷺ strongly warned against hatred and division. Muslims are commanded to maintain brotherhood and reconciliation.

Allah says:

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.”
— Qur’an 3:103

This shows why maintaining unity upon the truth is an important part of protecting the Muslim community from the schemes of Shaytaan.

Does the Hadeeth Mean No One in Arabia Can Commit Shirk?

No.

This hadeeth should not be understood to mean that every individual in the Arabian Peninsula is automatically protected from Shirk, disbelief or sin.

Rather, the wording concerns Shaytaan's despair of achieving the particular objective mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ.

The Qur’an and Sunnah clearly establish that individuals can fall into different forms of disobedience, and therefore Muslims must continually learn Tawheed, avoid Shirk and remain upon obedience to Allah.

Shaytaan's Despair Does Not Mean His Efforts Have Ended

Shaytaan has promised to continue attempting to mislead the children of Adam.

Allah tells us that Shaytaan said:

“I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.”
— Qur’an 7:16

He tries to approach people from different directions and uses different methods to lead them away from the straight path.

Sometimes the temptation is toward a major sin. At other times, it may begin with something apparently small and eventually lead to something greater.

For this reason, the believer should always seek Allah's protection.

How Can We Protect Ourselves From Shaytaan?

The Qur’an and Sunnah teach Muslims several means of protection.

1. Seek Refuge in Allah

Allah says:

“And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Shaytaan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.”
— Qur’an 7:200

A Muslim should say:

A‘oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaan ir-Rajeem
“I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytaan.”

2. Maintain the Prayer

Salah is one of the greatest means of remembering Allah and remaining connected to Him.

Allah says:

“Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing.”
— Qur’an 29:45

3. Remember Allah Frequently

Dhikr protects the heart from heedlessness and reminds the believer of Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged remembering Allah in all circumstances.

4. Avoid Arguments and Hatred

Since Shaytaan seeks to create enmity between people, Muslims should be particularly careful with anger, insults, suspicion and unnecessary disputes.

When a disagreement occurs, returning to the Qur’an and Sunnah, speaking fairly and seeking reconciliation can prevent a conflict from becoming an opportunity for Shaytaan.

5. Learn Tawheed and the Sunnah

Knowledge protects a person from many forms of misguidance. A Muslim should learn what Allah has commanded, what He has prohibited, and how the Prophet ﷺ taught his Companions to worship Allah.

A Powerful Lesson for Every Muslim

This hadeeth teaches us that Shaytaan has different strategies. If he cannot accomplish one objective, he does not simply stop. Instead, he seeks other ways to harm people.

Therefore, Muslims should not only be concerned about obvious acts of disobedience. They should also be concerned about broken relationships, hatred, arrogance, jealousy and division.

A person may think that an argument is insignificant, while Shaytaan sees it as an opportunity to create long-term hatred.

The believer should therefore ask:

“Will this action bring me closer to Allah, or will it give Shaytaan an opportunity against me?”

Conclusion

The hadeeth, “Indeed, Shaytaan has despaired that the worshippers will worship him in the Arabian Peninsula, but he seeks to cause enmity among them,” is a profound reminder of the methods of Shaytaan.

It does not mean that Shaytaan has stopped tempting people or that individuals are incapable of falling into Shirk and sin. Rather, it highlights his despair of achieving the particular form of widespread worship mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ, while emphasizing his continuing efforts to create enmity, hatred and division.

A Muslim should therefore hold firmly to Tawheed, the Qur’an and Sunnah, maintain the prayer, remember Allah, seek refuge from Shaytaan and strive for reconciliation and brotherhood.

May Allah protect us from the whispers and plots of Shaytaan, keep our hearts firm upon Tawheed and the Sunnah, unite the Muslims upon truth and obedience, and grant us protection from hatred, division and every form of misguidance. Ameen.
