What Is Al-‘Aqeedah al-Tahhaawiyyah?

Al-‘Aqeedah al-Tahhaawiyyah is one of the well-known classical texts on Islamic creed (‘aqeedah). It was written by Imam Abu Ja‘far al-Tahhaawi (رحمه الله), a renowned scholar of the third century after Hijrah. The work presents a concise summary of fundamental beliefs concerning Allah, His Names and Attributes, His Messengers, revelation, the Hereafter, divine decree, and other essential matters of faith.

The full title is commonly given as “Bayaan ‘Aqeedah Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamaa‘ah”, meaning a clarification of the creed of Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamaa‘ah.

Who Was Imam al-Tahhaawi?

Imam Abu Ja‘far Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Tahhaawi (رحمه الله) was born in Egypt and became a prominent scholar of Islamic jurisprudence and hadith. He studied under a number of leading scholars of his time and became particularly renowned for his knowledge of the Hanafi school of jurisprudence.

His ‘Aqeedah was written to explain the beliefs that he regarded as belonging to the mainstream Sunni tradition and to distinguish them from theological positions that he considered contrary to those beliefs.

Why Was Al-‘Aqeedah al-Tahhaawiyyah Written?

The text was composed as a concise statement of creed rather than as an extensive theological treatise. Imam al-Tahhaawi presents fundamental principles of faith in a relatively short format.

Among the subjects discussed are:

  • Belief in the oneness and uniqueness of Allah
  • Allah's Names and Attributes
  • Allah's knowledge and power
  • Divine decree (al-qadar)
  • The Qur'an
  • Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
  • The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ
  • The angels and revealed Books
  • The resurrection and Day of Judgment
  • Paradise and Hell
  • The questioning and punishment of the grave
  • Intercession
  • The signs of the Hour
  • Faith (eemaan)
  • The position of the Muslim community and its rulers

What Does the Text Teach About Allah?

A central theme of Al-‘Aqeedah al-Tahhaawiyyah is that Allah is One and has no partner. He is unique in His Lordship, worship, Names and Attributes.

The creed emphasizes that Allah is not comparable to His creation. Muslims affirm what Allah has revealed about Himself while maintaining His transcendence and uniqueness.

The Qur'an states:

“There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”
— Qur'an 42:11

This principle is fundamental to Islamic belief: Allah possesses perfect Names and Attributes, while nothing in creation resembles Him.

Belief in Divine Decree

Another important subject in the text is al-qadar, or divine decree.

Islam teaches that Allah has complete knowledge of everything that happens. Nothing occurs outside His knowledge and will. At the same time, human beings are responsible for their choices and actions.

Understanding divine decree requires recognizing both Allah's complete sovereignty and human accountability.

Belief in the Qur'an

Al-‘Aqeedah al-Tahhaawiyyah also addresses the status of the Qur'an. The Qur'an is the revelation of Allah and is not comparable to the speech of created beings.

The Qur'an itself says:

“And if one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah.”
— Qur'an 9:6

The doctrine concerning the Qur'an became particularly important in the theological debates of the early centuries of Islam, and Imam al-Tahhaawi's statement reflects the importance of affirming the divine origin of revelation.

Belief in Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Muslims believe that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger and servant of Allah and the final Prophet.

Belief in him includes believing what he conveyed from Allah, obeying his teachings, and accepting his Sunnah as guidance.

The Qur'an says:

“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets.”
— Qur'an 33:40

The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ

The creed also discusses the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Muslims are taught to respect the Companions and recognize their important role in transmitting Islam to subsequent generations.

The Qur'an praises the early believers who supported the Messenger ﷺ, while Islamic scholarship also developed principles for discussing historical disagreements among the Companions with fairness and restraint.

Belief in the Hereafter

Al-‘Aqeedah al-Tahhaawiyyah affirms numerous matters connected with the Hereafter, including:

  • Resurrection after death
  • Judgment before Allah
  • Paradise
  • Hellfire
  • The questioning of the grave
  • The punishment and blessings of the grave
  • Intercession
  • The weighing of deeds
  • The crossing of the Siraat

These beliefs remind Muslims that worldly life is temporary and that every person will ultimately return to Allah.

What Is the Importance of Studying Al-‘Aqeedah al-Tahhaawiyyah?

The value of Al-‘Aqeedah al-Tahhaawiyyah lies in its concise presentation of numerous foundational beliefs. Because the original text is relatively brief, scholars throughout the centuries have written explanations and commentaries to clarify its terminology and discuss areas where theological interpretation has differed.

Students should therefore study the text with a reliable scholarly explanation, particularly because some of its statements are very concise and have been interpreted differently by various Sunni scholars.

Conclusion

Al-‘Aqeedah al-Tahhaawiyyah remains an important classical work for studying Islamic creed. Written by Imam Abu Ja‘far al-Tahhaawi (رحمه الله), it brings together beliefs concerning Allah, His revelation, His Messengers, divine decree, the Companions, the Hereafter, and other fundamental matters of faith.

Studying such texts can help Muslims understand the foundations of Islamic belief and appreciate the importance that classical scholars placed on preserving and explaining matters of ‘aqeedah.

Above all, Islamic belief is founded upon the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, and the statements of scholars are studied as explanations and formulations of those foundational sources.

May Allah grant us sound faith, beneficial knowledge, and steadfastness upon the truth. Ameen.
