What Is Sound `Aqidah?
Introduction
Aqidah is the foundation of a Muslim’s faith. The word refers to the beliefs that a person firmly holds in their heart and considers to be true. A sound `Aqidah means having correct beliefs about Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree, based upon the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah.
Just as a building cannot stand firmly without a strong foundation, a Muslim’s worship and actions are built upon the foundation of correct belief.
What Does `Aqidah Mean?
The Arabic word Aqidah** comes from the root **aqada, meaning to tie, bind, or firmly establish. In an Islamic context, it refers to the beliefs that are firmly established in a person's heart.
Sound `Aqidah therefore means believing in what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ have taught regarding matters of faith, without adding beliefs that have no basis in revelation.
The Foundations of Sound `Aqidah
The core beliefs of Islam are summarized in the six pillars of Iman:
1. Belief in Allah
A Muslim believes that Allah alone is the Creator, Owner, and Controller of everything. He alone deserves worship.
Allah says:
“So know that there is no deity except Allah.”
Qur’an 47:19
Sound `Aqidah includes affirming Allah’s perfect names and attributes in the manner taught by the Qur’an and Sunnah, while declaring Him free from any imperfection.
2. Belief in the Angels
Muslims believe that angels are real creations of Allah. They worship Him, obey His commands, and carry out the responsibilities He has given them.
Among them are Jibril عليه السلام, Mika’il عليه السلام, and Israfil عليه السلام.
3. Belief in the Revealed Books
A Muslim believes that Allah revealed guidance to His messengers. These revelations include the Tawrah, Zabur, Injil, and the Qur’an.
The Qur’an is the final revelation, preserved by Allah and sent as guidance for humanity.
4. Belief in the Messengers
Allah sent prophets and messengers to guide people toward His worship. Muslims believe in all the prophets mentioned in revelation and do not reject any of them.
Muhammad ﷺ is the final Messenger of Allah, and there is no prophet after him.
5. Belief in the Last Day
Sound `Aqidah includes belief in resurrection, judgment, Paradise, Hellfire, and the accountability of every person before Allah.
This belief reminds a Muslim that worldly life is temporary and that every deed ultimately matters.
6. Belief in Divine Decree
A Muslim believes in Qadar—that Allah has knowledge of everything, that everything occurs according to His decree and wisdom, and that nothing escapes His knowledge or power.
At the same time, Islam teaches human responsibility for the choices and actions a person willingly makes.
Why Is Sound `Aqidah Important?
Sound `Aqidah gives a Muslim a clear understanding of why they were created and whom they worship. It protects the heart from false beliefs and helps a person remain firm during trials and difficulties.
Correct belief also gives meaning to worship. Salah, fasting, charity, Hajj, and other righteous deeds are not merely outward actions; they are connected to what a person believes in their heart.
When `Aqidah is sound, worship is directed toward Allah with sincerity, knowledge, hope, and fear.
The Qur’an and Sunnah Are the Foundation
The safest way to understand Islamic `Aqidah is through the Qur’an and the authentic teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Allah says:
“And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger—they will be with those upon whom Allah has bestowed favor…”
Qur’an 4:69
A Muslim should therefore be careful about accepting religious beliefs based merely on culture, personal opinion, speculation, or statements that contradict authentic revelation.
Sound `Aqidah Produces Sound Character
`Aqidah is not simply a theoretical subject. True faith affects a person's everyday life.
Belief in Allah encourages sincerity.
Belief in the Last Day encourages accountability.
Belief in Allah’s mercy gives hope.
Belief in His wisdom teaches patience.
Belief in His knowledge encourages humility.
Thus, sound `Aqidah should be reflected in a Muslim’s worship, manners, decisions, and relationship with other people.

Sound `Aqidah is the foundation upon which a Muslim’s faith and actions are built. It means holding firmly to the beliefs taught by the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah concerning Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree.
Learning `Aqidah is therefore not merely an academic exercise. It is a means of knowing Allah correctly, worshipping Him sincerely, and remaining steadfast upon the truth.
