When the Prophet ﷺ Met the Other Prophets in Bayt al-Maqdis: Did He Meet Their Souls Without Their Bodies?
Introduction
The miraculous journey of Al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj (the Night Journey and Ascension) is one of the greatest signs of Allah's power. During this blessed journey, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ travelled from Al-Masjid al-Haram in Makkah to Al-Masjid al-Aqsa in Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), where he led all the previous prophets in prayer before ascending through the heavens.

When the Prophet ﷺ met the previous prophets in Bayt al-Maqdis, did he meet them physically, or did he meet only their souls?

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Allah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the Prophets."

Likewise, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"The Prophets are alive in their graves, praying."
Their life in the grave (Barzakh) is a real life, but it is unlike worldly life. Its exact nature is known only to Allah.
The Opinion of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah explained that when the Prophet ﷺ met the prophets in Bayt al-Maqdis, he met their souls, while their blessed bodies remained in their graves.
He also clarified that seeing the prophets in the heavens during the Mi'raj does not require their bodies to have left their graves.
Rather, Allah enabled the Prophet ﷺ to see them in the unseen realm, just as the souls experience conditions different from those of the physical body.
This explanation combines all the authentic narrations without contradiction.
Why Was Musa عليه السلام Seen in the Heavens?
Some people ask:
If Musa (peace be upon him) remains in his grave, how was he seen in the sixth heaven?
The answer is that the world of souls is unlike the physical world.
Just as martyrs enjoy blessings after death while their bodies remain buried, Allah allowed the Prophet ﷺ to see the souls of the prophets in the heavens.
The Prophet ﷺ also passed by the grave of Musa عليه السلام and said that he saw him praying in his grave.
Therefore:
Musa was seen praying in his grave.
Musa was also seen in the heavens during the Mi'raj.
There is no contradiction because the affairs of the soul belong to the unseen world, whose reality is known only to Allah.
Why Did Allah Gather the Prophets in Bayt al-Maqdis?
The gathering of all the prophets carried profound wisdom.
1. To Honour the Final Messenger ﷺ
By leading all previous prophets in prayer, Muhammad ﷺ was shown to be the Seal of the Prophets and their Imam.
2. To Demonstrate the Unity of the Prophetic Message
Every prophet called people to worship Allah alone.
Their gathering behind Muhammad ﷺ symbolized that Islam is the completion of the message brought by all previous prophets.
3. To Highlight the Importance of Al-Masjid al-Aqsa
Bayt al-Maqdis has been a place of revelation and prophethood for centuries.
The Night Journey reaffirmed its blessed status in Islam.
Lessons for Muslims
The Night Journey teaches many important lessons:
Believe in the unseen exactly as revealed by Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
Honour all the prophets without making distinctions in belief.
Recognize the unique status of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the final messenger.
Appreciate the virtue of Al-Masjid al-Aqsa.
Understand that the life of the prophets in Barzakh differs completely from worldly life.

The stronger opinion among many scholars is that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ met the previous prophets in Bayt al-Maqdis, he met their souls rather than their earthly bodies, while their blessed bodies remained preserved in their graves.
This understanding harmonizes all the authentic narrations concerning the Night Journey, the prophets' life in Barzakh, and their appearance in the heavens during the Mi'raj.
As with all matters of the unseen, Muslims affirm what has been authentically reported without attempting to describe its exact nature. Allah alone knows the full reality of the unseen, and the believer accepts His revelation with faith, humility, and submission.
