What Was Prophet Zakariyya’s (AS)                          Relationship to Maryam (AS)?

Introduction

Among the many inspiring relationships mentioned in the Qur'an, the bond between Prophet Zakariyya (AS) and Maryam (AS) stands out as one of faith, compassion, and divine care. Their story teaches us about trust in Allah, sincere worship, and the importance of righteous guardianship.

Although Prophet Zakariyya (AS) was not Maryam's biological father, Allah chose him to care for her during her upbringing. Their relationship became a beautiful example of how sincere believers can positively shape one another's lives.

Who Was Maryam (AS)?

Maryam (AS), the mother of Prophet Isa (Jesus, AS), is one of the most honoured women in Islam. She is the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur'an, and an entire chapter—Surah Maryam—is named after her.

Allah describes her as a woman of exceptional purity, devotion, and faith. From a young age, she dedicated herself to the worship of Allah in the sacred sanctuary (Mihrab).

Who Was Prophet Zakariyya (AS)?

Prophet Zakariyya (AS) was a noble prophet from the Children of Israel. He was known for his wisdom, righteousness, and unwavering devotion to Allah. He spent his life calling people toward righteousness while serving as a caretaker of the sacred sanctuary.

He was married to a relative of Maryam's family, making him a close family member as well as her guardian according to many Islamic scholars.

How Did Zakariyya (AS) Become Maryam's Guardian?

Maryam's mother, the wife of Imran, dedicated her unborn child to the service of Allah before Maryam was even born. After Maryam's birth, she fulfilled her promise and entrusted her daughter to the care of the temple.

Allah says:

"Her Lord accepted her with gracious acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and entrusted her to the care of Zakariyya."
(Qur'an 3:37)

Islamic tradition mentions that several righteous men wished to become Maryam's guardian. They cast lots, and by Allah's decree, Prophet Zakariyya (AS) was chosen to care for her.

Zakariyya's Care for Maryam

Zakariyya (AS) ensured that Maryam had everything she needed for both her physical well-being and her spiritual growth. She spent much of her time in worship, remembrance of Allah, and devotion.

One remarkable event repeatedly amazed Prophet Zakariyya (AS).

Whenever he entered her place of worship, he found provisions with her.

Allah says:

"Whenever Zakariyya entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, 'O Maryam, from where has this come to you?' She replied, 'It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without measure.'"
(Qur'an 3:37)

These miraculous provisions strengthened Zakariyya's faith even further and reminded him that Allah's mercy knows no limits.

How Maryam Inspired Zakariyya (AS)

Witnessing Allah's blessings upon Maryam inspired Prophet Zakariyya (AS) to make one of the most heartfelt supplications recorded in the Qur'an.

Although he and his wife had reached old age and had no children, he turned to Allah with complete hope.

He prayed:

"My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."
(Qur'an 3:38)

Allah accepted his sincere prayer and blessed him with Prophet Yahya (John, AS), despite his old age and his wife's infertility.

This teaches us that no sincere prayer is impossible for Allah.
