Ruling on Finding Out About People’s Nature and Character from Their Zodiac Signs
Introduction
Many people today read horoscopes or look at zodiac signs to determine someone's personality, compatibility, strengths, weaknesses, or even future. Astrology has become widespread through social media, magazines, websites, and mobile applications. Some people take it lightly as entertainment, while others genuinely believe that a person's character is determined by the stars under which they were born.
From an Islamic perspective, however, such beliefs must be examined in the light of the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah.
What Are Zodiac Signs?
The zodiac is a system that divides the year into twelve astrological signs based on the apparent position of the sun at the time of a person's birth. Astrology claims that these signs influence a person's personality, behavior, relationships, and future.
Examples include Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
The Islamic View
Islam teaches that Allah alone is the Creator and Controller of the universe. The stars, planets, and celestial bodies are among His magnificent creations and have specific purposes determined by Him.
Allah says:
"And He is the One Who made the stars for you so that you may be guided by them through the darkness of the land and sea."
(Surah Al-An'am 6:97)
Allah also says:
"Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with stars."
(Surah As-Saffat 37:6)
The Qur'an mentions the stars as signs of Allah's greatness, adornments of the heavens, means of navigation, and missiles against devils. It does not teach that they determine human personalities or destinies.
Can Zodiac Signs Reveal Someone's Character?
There is no evidence in the Qur'an or the authentic Sunnah that a person's nature, character, intelligence, honesty, or behavior can be determined by the month or constellation under which they were born.
A person's character is shaped by factors such as:
- Faith (Iman)
- Upbringing
- Environment
- Personal choices
- Good manners (Akhlaq)
- Obedience to Allah
Not by the position of stars or planets.
Believing that zodiac signs determine personality attributes is attributing unseen influences to Allah's creation without any proof.
Knowledge of the Unseen Belongs Only to Allah
Allah says:
"Say, None in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allah."
(Surah An-Naml 27:65)
Astrological predictions often claim knowledge about people's future, emotions, relationships, and success. Such claims contradict the Islamic belief that knowledge of the unseen belongs solely to Allah.
The Warning of the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ strongly warned against seeking knowledge from fortune tellers and astrologers.
He said:
"Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him about something, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights."
(Sahih Muslim)
He also said:
"Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ."
(Reported by Ahmad and others; authenticated by many scholars.)
Although zodiac personality descriptions may appear harmless, they originate from astrological beliefs that have no basis in Islam.
Why Do Zodiac Personality Descriptions Seem Accurate?
Many horoscope descriptions are intentionally vague and general enough to apply to almost anyone. This psychological phenomenon is known as the Barnum Effect, where people tend to accept broad, flattering statements as uniquely applicable to themselves.
For example:
- "You sometimes enjoy being alone."
- "You care deeply about people close to you."
- "You occasionally doubt yourself."
Such statements can describe almost everyone, creating the illusion that astrology is accurate.
Is Reading Zodiac Signs for Entertainment Permissible?
Many scholars advise Muslims to avoid reading horoscopes and zodiac personality descriptions altogether, even for entertainment, because:
- It may gradually strengthen belief in astrology.
- It normalizes false claims about the unseen.
- It can lead to dependence on superstitious beliefs.
- It resembles practices that Islam discourages.
A Muslim should instead seek guidance through the Qur'an, Sunnah, sincere du'a, and reliance upon Allah (Tawakkul).
How Should We Judge People's Character?
Islam encourages judging people by what is apparent from their conduct, not by their birth dates.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The best among you are those with the best manners."
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
Good character is demonstrated through:
- Honesty
- Trustworthiness
- Patience
- Kindness
- Humility
- Justice
- Fear of Allah
These qualities cannot be determined through zodiac signs.
Conclusion
Islam does not recognize zodiac signs as a valid means of understanding a person's nature, character, or future. The stars are among Allah's creations and serve purposes that He has assigned to them, but they possess no independent power to influence human personalities or destinies.
A Muslim should place complete trust in Allah, seek authentic Islamic knowledge, and judge people based on their faith, manners, and actions rather than astrological claims. True guidance comes from Allah alone, and the best path is to follow the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
