Ruling on Finding Out About People’s Nature and Character from Their Zodiac Signs
Introduction
Many people enjoy reading horoscopes or checking zodiac signs to learn about their personality, relationships, or future. Newspapers, social media, and mobile apps often present zodiac predictions as harmless entertainment. However, Islam provides clear guidance regarding such beliefs.
Can a person's nature and character really be determined by their zodiac sign? What does Islam say about this practice? This article explores the Islamic ruling based on the Qur'an and Sunnah.
What Are Zodiac Signs?
The zodiac is a system that divides the sky into twelve constellations. According to astrology, a person's date of birth determines their zodiac sign, which is believed to influence their personality, behavior, compatibility with others, and future events.
The twelve zodiac signs are:
Aries
Taurus
Gemini
Cancer
Leo
Virgo
Libra
Scorpio
Sagittarius
Capricorn
Aquarius
Pisces
Astrology claims that these signs reveal hidden aspects of a person's character and destiny.
What Does Islam Say About Astrology?
Islam distinguishes between astronomy, which is the scientific study of celestial bodies, and astrology, which claims that stars and planets influence human lives and reveal unseen matters.
Astronomy is beneficial and permissible because it helps determine prayer times, the Islamic calendar, and the direction of the Qiblah.
Astrology, however, is prohibited because it involves making claims about the unseen (Ghayb), which belongs to Allah alone.
Allah says in the Qur'an:
"Say: None in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allah."
(Surah An-Naml 27:65)
This verse makes it clear that knowledge of the unseen is exclusively with Allah.
Can Zodiac Signs Reveal Someone's Character?
No.
There is no evidence in the Qur'an or authentic Sunnah that a person's personality, nature, intelligence, honesty, or future can be determined by the position of the stars at the time of birth.
Every individual is unique. Character is shaped by faith, upbringing, choices, environment, and personal effort—not by zodiac signs.
Believing that zodiac signs determine personality attributes is a false belief with no basis in Islam.
The Warning of the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly warned against consulting fortune tellers and those who claim knowledge of the unseen.
He ﷺ said:
"Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him about anything, his prayers will not be accepted for forty days."
(Sahih Muslim)
In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ warned that believing such claims is a serious matter because it contradicts the revelation from Allah.
Although many horoscope columns appear harmless, they are based on the same principles as astrology.
"I Read It Just for Fun"
Many people say they do not actually believe in horoscopes and only read them for entertainment.
Even so, scholars advise Muslims to avoid this habit because:
It normalizes belief in astrology.
It may gradually influence one's thinking.
It opens the door to superstition.
It distracts a believer from relying upon Allah.
A Muslim should protect their faith from anything that may weaken Tawheed.
Where Should We Seek Guidance?
Instead of turning to zodiac signs, Islam teaches us to seek guidance from Allah through:
Making sincere du'a.
Performing Istikharah when making important decisions.
Reading and reflecting on the Qur'an.
Seeking advice from knowledgeable and trustworthy people.
Placing complete trust (Tawakkul) in Allah.
Our future is in Allah's Hands, not in the stars.
Building Character the Islamic Way
Islam encourages believers to improve their character through worship and righteous deeds.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The best among you are those who have the best character."
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Good character comes through faith, self-discipline, sincerity, patience, and following the teachings of Islam—not through astrology.
Conclusion
Determining someone's nature or character based on their zodiac sign has no basis in Islam. Astrology's claims about personality and destiny are unsupported by authentic Islamic teachings and involve speaking about matters of the unseen, which only Allah knows.
A Muslim should place their trust in Allah, seek guidance through prayer and the Qur'an, and strive to develop noble character through faith and righteous actions. True success lies in following the guidance of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, not in the predictions of horoscopes or zodiac signs.
May Allah protect us from false beliefs, strengthen our faith, and guide us to what pleases Him. Ameen.
