Qiyam al-Layl in the Qur’an and Sunnah

Introduction

Qiyam al-Layl (قيام الليل), meaning "standing during the night," is one of the most beloved acts of worship in Islam. It refers to voluntary prayers offered after the 'Isha prayer and before Fajr. This blessed act includes Tahajjud, Witr, and other forms of night worship such as recitation of the Qur’an, dhikr (remembrance of Allah), and supplication.

The righteous throughout history have cherished the quiet moments of the night as an opportunity to draw closer to Allah. Qiyam al-Layl is a source of spiritual strength, forgiveness, tranquility, and immense reward. The Qur’an and Sunnah contain numerous references highlighting its virtue and importance.

Qiyam al-Layl in the Qur’an

1. A Characteristic of the Righteous

Allah سبحانه وتعالى praises His righteous servants:

“They used to sleep but little by night, and in the hours before dawn they would seek forgiveness.”

(Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:17-18)

This verse describes the pious believers who dedicate part of their nights to worship and seek Allah's forgiveness before dawn.

2. A Means of Drawing Near to Allah

Allah commands His Prophet ﷺ:

“And during the night, wake up and pray as an additional prayer for you; it may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station.”

(Surah Al-Isra 17:79)

This verse highlights the special status that night prayer can bring a believer in the sight of Allah.

3. The Distinction of True Believers

Allah says:

“Their sides forsake their beds, calling upon their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend from what We have provided them.”

(Surah As-Sajdah 32:16)

The believers willingly leave the comfort of their beds to stand before Allah, motivated by hope in His mercy and fear of His punishment.

4. The Servants of the Most Merciful

Allah praises His devoted servants:

“And those who spend part of the night to their Lord prostrating and standing.”

(Surah Al-Furqan 25:64)

This verse shows that night worship is among the defining qualities of the servants of Ar-Rahman.

Qiyam al-Layl in the Sunnah

1. The Best Prayer After the Obligatory Prayers

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.”

(Sahih Muslim)

This hadith clearly demonstrates the superiority of Qiyam al-Layl among all voluntary acts of prayer.

2. A Habit of the Righteous

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“You should perform Qiyam al-Layl, for it was the practice of the righteous before you, a means of drawing closer to your Lord, an expiation for sins, and a prevention from wrongdoing.”

(Jami' at-Tirmidhi)

This beautiful hadith outlines several benefits of night prayer, including spiritual purification and protection from sin.

3. Allah Descends to the Lowest Heaven

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the night remains and says: ‘Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?’”

(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

This is one of the greatest motivations for believers to engage in worship during the last portion of the night.

4. The Prophet’s Consistency in Night Prayer

Aisha (رضي الله عنها) reported:

“The Prophet ﷺ used to stand in prayer at night until his feet became swollen.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

Despite being forgiven for all his past and future sins, the Prophet ﷺ remained steadfast in Qiyam al-Layl as an expression of gratitude to Allah.
