                What Is Qurbani in Islam?

Introduction

Qurbani, also known as Udhiya, is one of the most important acts of worship performed by Muslims during the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah, especially on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. It is the sacred act of sacrificing an animal for the sake of Allah ﷻ, following the beautiful Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Qurbani symbolizes obedience, devotion, sacrifice, and gratitude towards Allah.

Allah says in the Holy Quran:

“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him.”

This verse highlights that the true essence of Qurbani lies in taqwa (piety), intention, and devotion.

Who Should Perform Qurbani?

Qurbani is required for every financially capable Muslim adult during Eid al-Adha. It is performed after the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah and can continue until the sunset of the 12th of Dhul Hijjah.

The animals chosen for Qurbani must meet Islamic guidelines:

  • They should be healthy and free from defects.
  • They must reach the required age according to Islamic teachings.
  • The sacrifice should be performed in the name of Allah ﷻ.

Distribution of Qurbani Meat

One of the beautiful aspects of Qurbani is sharing blessings with others. The meat is generally divided into three parts:

  1. One part for the family
  2. One part for relatives and friends
  3. One part for the poor and needy
