What to Avoid in the First 10 Days of
Dhul-Hijjah
Introduction
The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are among the most sacred and beloved days in Islam. These blessed days are filled with opportunities to increase worship, seek forgiveness, perform good deeds, and strengthen our connection with Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that no good deeds are more beloved to Allah than those done during these ten days.
While many Muslims focus on increasing acts of worship during this time, it is equally important to avoid actions that can reduce the rewards and blessings of these precious days. Protecting our hearts, tongues, and actions from sin allows us to fully benefit from the mercy and spirituality of Dhul-Hijjah.
1. Avoid Neglecting Your Obligatory Prayers
One of the biggest mistakes during these blessed days is becoming busy with worldly matters and neglecting the five daily prayers. Salah is the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and should always come first.
Use these days to:
- Pray on time
- Concentrate sincerely in prayer
- Offer extra Sunnah and Nafl prayers
- Increase your connection with Allah
No amount of voluntary worship can replace neglected obligatory prayers.
2. Avoid Sinful Speech
The tongue can easily lead a person into sin without realizing it. During the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, avoid:
- Gossip and backbiting
- Lying
- Arguing unnecessarily
- Using abusive or hurtful language
- Spreading negativity
Instead, keep your tongue busy with:
- Dhikr (remembrance of Allah)
- Takbeer
- Tahleel
- Tahmeed
- Sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ
Good speech brings peace to the heart and increases rewards.
3. Avoid Wasting Time
These ten days are extremely valuable, yet many people spend them distracted by entertainment, social media, or unnecessary activities.
Try to avoid:
- Excessive scrolling on social media
- Watching inappropriate content
- Spending hours on useless entertainment
- Delaying acts of worship
Use your time wisely by reading the Qur’an, making du’a, helping others, and remembering Allah.
4. Avoid Disobeying Parents or Hurting Others
Good character is a major part of worship in Islam. During these blessed days, avoid:
- Disrespecting parents
- Breaking family ties
- Hurting others emotionally or physically
- Holding grudges and hatred
Instead, focus on kindness, forgiveness, patience, and maintaining strong relationships with family and friends.
5. Avoid Showing Off in Worship
Acts of worship should be done sincerely for Allah alone. Sometimes people may seek praise from others by displaying their worship publicly.
Avoid:
- Showing off charitable acts
- Worshipping for attention or compliments
- Competing for praise
Allah values sincerity more than the amount of deeds performed.
6. Avoid Missing the Opportunity of Dhikr
Many people miss the special reward of remembering Allah during these days. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged Muslims to increase in:
- Takbeer: Allahu Akbar
- Tahmeed: Alhamdulillah
- Tahleel: La ilaha illallah
- Tasbeeh: SubhanAllah
Do not let these blessed moments pass without filling your heart and tongue with remembrance of Allah.
7. Avoid Cutting Hair and Nails (For Those Offering Qurbani)
Those intending to offer Qurbani (sacrifice) are advised not to cut their hair or nails after the beginning of Dhul-Hijjah until the sacrifice is completed.
This Sunnah reminds Muslims of devotion, sacrifice, and obedience to Allah.
8. Avoid Delaying Repentance
These days are a golden opportunity to seek forgiveness from Allah. Do not delay repentance while thinking there will always be more time.
Avoid:
- Continuing sinful habits
- Ignoring guilt for wrong actions
- Becoming careless about repentance
Turn back to Allah sincerely with humility and hope.
9. Avoid Being Ungrateful
Dhul-Hijjah is a time to reflect on Allah’s countless blessings. Avoid complaining excessively or focusing only on difficulties.
Practice gratitude by:
- Thanking Allah daily
- Helping those less fortunate
- Appreciating family, health, and faith
Gratitude increases blessings and brings inner peace.
10. Avoid Missing Good Deeds
One of the greatest losses during these ten days is simply letting them pass without making the most of them.
Avoid spiritual laziness and try to:
- Give charity
- Fast, especially on the Day of Arafah
- Read Qur’an daily
- Make sincere du’a
- Help people in need
- Strengthen your relationship with Allah
Even small good deeds are greatly rewarded during these blessed days.
Conclusion
The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are a precious gift from Allah — days filled with mercy, forgiveness, and countless opportunities to earn rewards. Along with increasing worship and good deeds, avoiding sins and harmful habits is essential to truly benefit from these sacred days.
Every moment of Dhul-Hijjah is valuable. By protecting our prayers, speech, intentions, and actions, we can draw closer to Allah and make these days spiritually transformative. May Allah allow us to spend these blessed days in sincerity, worship, repentance, and gratitude, and may He accept all our good deeds. Ameen.
