WHAT IS ISLAM?
Introduction
Islam is a complete way of life and one of the world’s major religions, followed by over a billion people across the globe. The word Islam comes from the Arabic root “S-L-M,” which means peace, submission, and surrender. In Islam, it refers to submitting one’s will to the One and Only God — Allah — and living a life of peace through obedience to Him.
The message of Islam was revealed to the final Prophet, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), over 1400 years ago in the holy book, the Qur'an.
1. Belief in One God (Tawheed)
The foundation of Islam is the belief in one God, Allah, who is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of everything in the universe. He has no partners, no children, and nothing is equal to Him.
✅ Muslims worship Allah alone and rely on Him in every aspect of life.
2. The Five Pillars of Islam
Islam is built on five core acts of worship, known as the pillars:
- Shahada (Faith): Declaring that there is no god but Allah, and Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is His messenger.
- Salah (Prayer): Offering five daily prayers to stay connected with Allah.
- Zakat (Charity): Giving a portion of wealth to help those in need.
- Sawm (Fasting): Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.
- Hajj (Pilgrimage): Performing pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime if able.
✅ These pillars guide a Muslim’s faith, actions, and discipline.
3. The Holy Quran
The Qur'an is the final revelation from Allah, providing guidance for all aspects of life — spiritual, moral, and social. It teaches justice, compassion, patience, and truth.
✅ Muslims read, understand, and follow the Quran as a complete guide to life.
4. Belief in Prophets
Muslims believe in all prophets sent by Allah, including Prophet Adam, Prophet Ibrahim, Prophet Musa, and Prophet Isa (peace be upon them all).
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is the final prophet who completed the message of Islam.
✅ All prophets delivered the same message: worship Allah alone.
5. A Complete Way of Life
Islam is not just a religion but a complete lifestyle. It teaches:
- Honesty and truthfulness
- Kindness and respect towards others
- Justice and fairness
- Patience during hardships
- Gratitude in times of ease
It covers all areas of life — from personal behavior to family, business, and society.
✅ Islam guides both spiritual and worldly matters.
6. Peace, Mercy, and Compassion
Islam emphasizes peace and mercy. Allah is described as Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful) and Ar-Raheem (The Most Compassionate). Muslims are encouraged to spread peace, help others, and forgive.
✅ A true Muslim reflects kindness, humility, and compassion in daily life.
7. Life After Death (Akhirah)
Islam teaches that this life is temporary and a test. After death, every person will be held accountable for their actions and will enter eternal life — either in Paradise or Hell.
✅ This belief encourages Muslims to live a righteous and meaningful life.
Conclusion
Islam is a religion of peace, submission, and purpose. It provides clear guidance on how to live a balanced and meaningful life while preparing for the Hereafter. Through faith, prayer, and good character, Muslims strive to earn Allah’s pleasure and attain eternal success.
