What are the Types of Hajj?

Introduction

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims around the world. Every year, millions of pilgrims travel to Makkah to perform this sacred journey, fulfilling a lifelong religious obligation. However, many people are unaware that Hajj is performed in different ways, each with its own rules and sequence of rituals. Understanding the types of Hajj helps pilgrims prepare better and choose the method that suits their circumstances.

There are three main types of Hajj: Hajj al-Ifrad, Hajj al-Tamattu, and Hajj al-Qiran. Each type differs in intention, rituals, and whether Umrah is performed along with Hajj.

1. Hajj al-Ifrad (Individual Hajj)

Hajj al-Ifrad is performed by pilgrims who intend to complete only Hajj without combining it with Umrah.

  • The pilgrim enters into Ihram with the intention of Hajj only.
  • They perform all the rituals of Hajj, including Tawaf, Sa’i, standing at Arafat, and other rites.
  • No Umrah is performed before Hajj.
  • There is no obligation to offer a sacrifice (Qurbani).

This type is usually preferred by residents of Makkah or those who do not wish to perform Umrah alongside Hajj.

2. Hajj al-Tamattu (Interrupted Hajj)

Hajj al-Tamattu is the most commonly performed type of Hajj, especially by international pilgrims.

  • The pilgrim first performs Umrah during the months of Hajj.
  • After completing Umrah, they exit the state of Ihram.
  • On the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, they re-enter Ihram with the intention of Hajj.
  • After completing Hajj rituals, a sacrifice (Qurbani) is required.

This type offers ease and flexibility, allowing pilgrims to rest between Umrah and Hajj. It is highly recommended for those traveling from outside Saudi Arabia.

3. Hajj al-Qiran (Combined Hajj)

Hajj al-Qiran involves performing both Umrah and Hajj together in a single state of Ihram.

  • The pilgrim enters Ihram with the intention of both Umrah and Hajj.
  • They remain in Ihram until all Hajj rituals are completed.
  • Umrah and Hajj are performed together without exiting Ihram.
  • A sacrifice (Qurbani) is mandatory.

This type requires more physical endurance because the pilgrim stays in Ihram for a longer period, but it carries a great spiritual reward.

For most pilgrims traveling from abroad, Hajj al-Tamattu is the preferred and easiest option due to its flexibility. However, the choice ultimately depends on individual circumstances, knowledge, and guidance.
