Who gave the name of Islam to our Religion?

Introduction

The name Islam is not something that was later chosen by people or scholars—it is a divinely given name. Unlike many religions that are named after a person, tribe, or region, Islam’s name comes directly from Allah (God) Himself. The word “Islam” is derived from the Arabic root S-L-M, which means peace, submission, and surrender—specifically, submission to the will of Allah.

Who Gave the Name “Islam”?

The name Islam was given by Allah Himself in the Qur'an, the holy book revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

One of the clearest pieces of evidence is found in the Qur'an:

“Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam.”
(Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:19)

Another important verse says:

“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:3)

These verses clearly show that:

  • Allah Himself named the religion Islam
  • He approved and perfected it as the final way of life for humanity

Meaning and Significance of the Name

The name Islam carries a deep meaning:

  • Submission to the will of Allah
  • Peace that comes from obeying Him
  • A complete way of life that guides every aspect—spiritual, moral, and social

A person who follows Islam is called a Muslim, meaning “one who submits to Allah.”

Was Islam a New Religion?

Islam is not a new religion started by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Rather, it is the same message that was preached by all previous prophets, including:

  • Adam
  • Ibrahim
  • Musa
  • Isa

All of them دعوت (called people) to worship one God—Allah—and to live in submission to Him. So, the essence of Islam has always existed, but it was completed and finalized during the time of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the name Islam was given directly by Allah, not by any human being. It is a name mentioned and approved in the Qur'an, reflecting a universal message of peace and submission to the One Creator. Islam is not tied to a person or place but represents a timeless and complete way of life for all of humanity.
