Everything You Need to Know About Ihram
Ihram is a state of spiritual and physical purity that Muslims must enter before performing Hajj or Umrah. It is both a physical and a symbolic condition that marks the beginning of the pilgrimage and serves as a way of showing submission and devotion to Allah (SWT).
This state imposes restrictions on certain behaviors and the wearing of particular types of clothing.
COMMON MISCONCEPTION
Many people mistakenly believe that the white garments worn by men during Hajj or Umrah are the Ihram itself, and that simply donning these garments automatically signifies entering the state of Ihram. However, this is not accurate. These garments are worn because they meet the Islamic requirement of being unstitched and untailored, as stitched or form-fitted clothing is prohibited for men during Ihram. It is important to understand that Ihram refers to a sacred state of intention and purity that one enters into by performing specific rites and making the intention (niyyah), not merely the act of wearing the garments.
Once the state of Ihram is entered, pilgrims are required to recite the Talbiyah, which is a proclamation of submission and devotion to Allah. The Talbiyah is as follows:
"لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ."
