Can I perform Umrah on behalf of someone else?
Yes, you can perform Umrah on behalf of someone else under specific conditions. This is known as Umrah Badal. However, there are certain guidelines to follow:
Conditions for Performing Umrah on Behalf of Someone Else
1. Eligibility of the Performer:
• You must have already completed your own Umrah at least once before performing it on behalf of someone else.
• You must meet the same requirements for performing Umrah, such as being physically and financially capable.
2. For Whom Can It Be Performed?
• Deceased: You can perform Umrah on behalf of someone who has passed away.
• Unable Individuals: You can perform Umrah on behalf of someone who is alive but physically or mentally incapable of performing it themselves due to illness, age, or disability.
3. Intention (Niyyah):
• You must clearly make the intention (niyyah) to perform Umrah on behalf of the other person before starting. For example:
“I intend to perform Umrah on behalf of [name of the person].”
4. Consent:
• If the person is alive, you should have their consent to perform Umrah on their behalf.
5. Reward:
• The reward of the Umrah will go to the person on whose behalf it is performed, but the performer also earns spiritual blessings for undertaking the act.
Steps to Perform Umrah on Behalf of Someone Else
The process is the same as performing Umrah for yourself:
1. Enter into Ihram with the intention for the other person.
2. Perform Tawaf (circling the Kaaba) and Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah) with the intention for the other person.
3. Complete the Umrah by shaving or trimming your hair, all on behalf of the individual.
Important Notes:
• You cannot perform Umrah for two people in one trip. Each Umrah must be done separately with Ihram and the intention set anew.
• Scholars generally agree on this practice, but it’s advisable to consult with a trusted Islamic scholar or local imam for guidance specific to your situation.
