What Was Prophet Zakariyya’s (AS)                                   Relationship to Maryam (AS)?

The relationship between Prophet Zakariyya (AS) and Maryam (AS) is a beautiful example of faith, devotion, guardianship, and trust in Allah. Their connection is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an, particularly in Surah Aal-e-Imran, highlighting the special responsibility Prophet Zakariyya (AS) had towards Maryam (AS).

Who Was Maryam (AS)?

Maryam (AS), the daughter of Imran, was a righteous and devoted woman chosen by Allah for a special honour. She was known for her purity, worship, and complete submission to Allah.

Her mother dedicated her to the service of Allah even before her birth. Allah accepted her dedication and blessed her with a special upbringing.

What Was Prophet Zakariyya’s (AS) Relationship with Maryam (AS)?

Prophet Zakariyya (AS) was Maryam’s guardian and caretaker. According to Islamic tradition, he was also her maternal relative, commonly understood as her maternal uncle.

After Maryam (AS) was entrusted to the care of the people responsible for the sacred sanctuary, they disputed over who would take responsibility for her. They eventually cast their pens to decide, and Allah chose Zakariyya (AS) to become her guardian.

The Qur’an mentions this event:

"That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens as to which of them should be responsible for Maryam."

— Surah Aal-e-Imran (3:44)

Prophet Zakariyya (AS) took responsibility for her upbringing and ensured that she had a place dedicated to worship and devotion.

The Miraculous Provision in Maryam’s Chamber

One of the most remarkable events in their relationship occurred when Prophet Zakariyya (AS) entered Maryam’s prayer chamber and found her with provisions.

He was surprised to see fruits and food that were not available at that time.

The Qur’an describes their conversation:

"O Maryam, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account."

— Surah Aal-e-Imran (3:37)

This extraordinary provision strengthened Prophet Zakariyya’s (AS) faith and inspired him to make a heartfelt supplication to Allah for a righteous child, even though he and his wife were advanced in age.

How Maryam’s Blessing Inspired Zakariyya (AS)

After witnessing Allah’s miraculous provision for Maryam (AS), Prophet Zakariyya (AS) turned to Allah with hope and made a sincere dua for offspring.

He prayed:

"My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."

— Surah Aal-e-Imran (3:38)

Allah answered his prayer and blessed him with a son, Yahya (AS), despite his old age and his wife's inability to bear children.

Lessons We Can Learn from Their Relationship

The story of Prophet Zakariyya (AS) and Maryam (AS) teaches us several important lessons:

  1. Trust in Allah: Allah's power is beyond human understanding, and He provides in ways we cannot imagine.

  2. The Importance of Guardianship: Taking responsibility for someone's upbringing and well-being is a noble act.

The story reminds us that Allah's blessings have no limits. Just as He provided for Maryam (AS) miraculously and granted Zakariyya (AS) a son in his old age, He can make the impossible possible through His infinite mercy and power.

Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account.
